He was arrested by the Chandra Sekharpur police, where he has around six cases registered against him. Additionally, there are several other criminal cases against him in different police jurisdictions. After his arrest, the police recovered eight gold chains from his possession, three of which have been identified by the victims. The police are now working to identify other victims as they continue their investigation into the remaining cases.
- CP Suresh Dev Datt Singh stated that the investigation revealed Rakesh Raut's previous involvement in chain snatching crimes.
- He had left the criminal world about ten years ago to start his business, during which he established around 15 shops and lived a normal life.
- Recently, due to financial strain and debts, he resumed chain snatching activities, with his wife as an equal partner in the crimes.
- Rakesh Raut and his wife executed their crimes in a cunning manner. Raut would target a woman to snatch her chain, and then his wife would join him on a motorcycle.
- The couple appeared to be an ordinary pair traveling together, which prevented suspicion from the public and police alike.
