Pochettino Takes Blame for USA's World Cup Exit Against Belgium
Pochettino Accepts Accountability for Loss
Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the United States, has taken full responsibility for his team's disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16. He acknowledged that the team struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match.
In an interview with FOX Sports after the game, Pochettino expressed that the United States did not bring the same level of intensity and quality that had characterized their previous performances in the tournament. He stated, "It was evident from the start that we were not in sync with the game. Even after we equalized, we conceded almost immediately. It was a challenging match; we failed to demonstrate our usual capabilities. We need to analyze why we approached this game differently than the others in the World Cup. Perhaps the reason is straightforward; it simply wasn't our day, both collectively and individually," as reported by Sky Sports. He further emphasized, "The main responsibility lies with me, but this was not reflective of our typical style of play."
Belgium Advances, Ending USA's World Cup Journey
Belgium secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a decisive 4-1 victory over the United States at Seattle Stadium. Charles De Ketelaere was a standout performer, scoring two goals and earning the Player of the Match title. Hans Vanaken also made his mark by netting his first-ever goal in a World Cup, while Romelu Lukaku added a late goal, marking his third consecutive World Cup match with a score.
Despite a brief equalizer from Malik Tillman via a deflected free-kick, Belgium maintained control for most of the match. A significant error from goalkeeper Matt Freese allowed Belgium to extend their lead, and Lukaku's late goal capped off the emphatic victory. This loss concluded the United States' World Cup journey, making them the last of the three co-host nations to exit the tournament, following Canada and Mexico. Belgium will face Spain in the quarter-finals on July 10, after Spain eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16.
