PM Modi Visits Melbourne Cricket Ground, Launches Sports Cooperation Roadmap
Prime Minister Modi's Visit to Australia
After successfully concluding his trip to Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Australia as part of a six-day tour across three nations. On Friday, he visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where he met with young cricketers and sports legends in the presence of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Reflecting on his experiences at this historic venue, PM Modi expressed, "Entering the MCG evokes two emotions for any Indian: the thrill of an India-Australia match and the realization that cricket is not just a sport but a shared passion between our nations." He added with a smile, "Today, however, there is no pressure of 'last over excitement.' Instead, we celebrate the joy of the game, the warmth of our friendship, and the energy of future champions."
Launch of India-Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap
During his visit to the MCG, PM Modi announced the launch of the India-Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap, emphasizing that this initiative aims to strengthen collaboration not only in cricket but across various sports. He stated, "I am delighted to launch the India-Australia Sports Cooperation Roadmap alongside Prime Minister Albanese today. This initiative will enhance our cooperation in sports training, sports science, and technology, allowing us to strengthen our partnership both on and off the field."
Cricket as a Unifying Force
PM Modi remarked, "Whenever I have had the opportunity to meet my friend Prime Minister Albanese, cricket has served as a natural connecting medium between us. We toured a stadium together in Ahmedabad, and being here today, I can truly feel the spirit of the game—especially in the presence of legends like Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar."
Meeting with Opposition Leader
Earlier in the day, during his three-day visit to Australia, PM Modi met with the opposition leader Angus Taylor to discuss bilateral relations, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on social media, "They had meaningful discussions on the growing 'comprehensive strategic partnership' between India and Australia. This warm and cordial meeting reflects the strong support from both major political parties to strengthen ties with India."
PM Modi's Arrival and Upcoming Plans
PM Modi arrived in Australia on July 8, following his trip to Indonesia. He is set to depart for New Zealand, marking the final leg of his six-day tour across three countries. During his stay in Australia, both nations signed several significant agreements in areas such as civil nuclear energy, maritime security, and critical minerals. PM Modi held a summit with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, where both leaders emphasized the crucial role of bilateral partnership in ensuring a peaceful Indo-Pacific region.
Key Agreements and Future Cooperation
A highlight of the summit was the focus on enhancing defense relations, particularly in the maritime domain. After over two years of negotiations, an agreement was finalized to facilitate the commercial supply of uranium from Australia to India, supporting New Delhi's nuclear energy projects. Additionally, India and Australia decided to expedite the finalization of the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and a bilateral investment protection framework to further enhance trade and investment relations.
Signing of Agreements
Following the summit between the two prime ministers, 18 agreements were signed, including a joint declaration on defense and security cooperation, a roadmap for maritime security cooperation, a joint statement on energy security, and partnerships in cyber, critical technologies, and supply chains. PM Modi also advocated for the swift finalization of the proposed India-Australia CECA, as it would further accelerate bilateral trade and investment relations. He addressed the Indian community at the 'Melbourne Meets Modi' event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Albanese.
