PM Modi Urges Unity for Women's Reservation Bill Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all MPs to support the Women's Reservation Bill, emphasizing its importance beyond mere legalities. He highlighted the critical role of women in India's development and the need for their increased representation in politics. Modi pointed out the historical challenges faced in achieving this goal and called for collective action to empower women, linking it to the constitutional values of equality. He believes that timely action is essential for the nation's progress and unity in addressing women's issues. This moment is seen as a pivotal opportunity for advancing women's rights in India.

Prime Minister's Call for Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to all members of Parliament to rise above party politics and support the proposed amendments to the Women's Reservation Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. In a special article shared on his website on Thursday, he emphasized that this initiative is not merely a 'legal procedure' but a confirmation of India's 'civilizational spirit.' He stated that to regard it solely as a legal process would undermine its significance; it reaffirms the principle that has long guided India's civilizational ethos.

Significance of Women's Empowerment

Highlighting that women constitute half of India's population and have played a crucial role in the nation's development, he noted that continuous efforts have been made for their empowerment. He mentioned that improved education, healthcare, and financial assistance have strengthened women's participation in both economic and social spheres.

Challenges in Political Representation

However, in an article posted on his website, Modi pointed out that women's participation in politics and legislative bodies has not reflected their societal role, which he deemed unfortunate. He acknowledged that despite repeated efforts to secure women's rightful place in democratic institutions, challenges persist.

Legislative Progress

Modi remarked, "Committees have been formed, and draft bills have been presented, but they have never materialized. Yet, there has been a broad consensus that women's representation in legislative bodies should increase. In September 2023, Parliament passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in line with this consensus. I consider this one of the most significant moments of my life."

Constitutional Connection

He further stated, "Ensuring reservation for women is deeply connected to the spirit of our Constitution. Our founders envisioned a society where equality is not only enshrined in the Constitution but also practiced. Strengthening women's participation in legislative bodies is a crucial step towards realizing that vision."

Urgency for Action

Modi emphasized that any delay in advancing women's representation hampers the quality and inclusiveness of India's democracy. He warned that such delays would only create imbalance, especially as India moves forward with confidence and purpose. He stressed the importance of timely action to ensure continuous progress for the nation.

A Call for Collective Action

Stating that this moment calls for collective action, Modi highlighted the nation's responsibility towards 'Nari Shakti.' He noted that the passage of the amendments reflects the 'widest possible consensus' and is guided by larger national interests. He concluded, "Such opportunities urge us to work not just for ourselves but for future generations. They remind us that the true strength of democracy lies in its ability to evolve and become more inclusive over time. India has always demonstrated that when it comes to matters of national importance, it can rise above differences and work in unity. This is such a moment. Let us all move forward together, strengthen constitutional values, and empower our 'Nari Shakti' for national progress."
