A Call for Self-Reliance
In a significant move towards self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged citizens to favor products made in India and reduce dependence on imported goods, especially during festivals like Holi, Diwali, and Ganesh Chaturthi. Addressing the public in Gujarat, he pointed out the influx of Chinese products in Indian markets, noting that even Ganesh idols are imported, including those with poorly crafted features. He emphasized the need to motivate local traders to pledge not to sell foreign goods, regardless of potential profits.
Concerns Over Imported Goods
Highlighting the issue of foreign imports, he remarked, "Unfortunately, even Ganesh idols come from abroad, with some having eyes that barely open. Even the colors for Holi are produced overseas." His comments come amid rising concerns about China's dumping of cheap goods in the Indian market. Items such as decorative lights, fireworks, toys, and religious idols, often imported at lower prices from China, have dominated festival sales in recent years, adversely affecting local artisans and manufacturers.
Self-Reflection on Imported Products
PM Modi urged individuals to reflect on their daily use of imported products. He challenged citizens to create a list of foreign items they use within a 24-hour period, highlighting that even everyday items like hairpins and combs may be imported. Calling for collective responsibility, he stated that if we wish to protect and advance India, the mission is not solely the duty of the armed forces but a shared responsibility of all 1.4 billion citizens.
