PM Modi Urges Citizens to Limit Gold Purchases and Cooking Oil Usage

Prime Minister's Call for Economic Self-Reliance

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to exercise restraint in purchasing gold and to limit their use of cooking oil. This initiative aims to strengthen the nation's economy and reduce reliance on foreign imports. He highlighted that India imports significant quantities of gold and edible oils annually, which places economic pressure on the country and drains a substantial portion of foreign currency.

The Prime Minister pointed out that India ranks among the largest consumers of gold globally. During festivals, weddings, and as a form of investment, people tend to buy gold in large amounts, most of which is imported. This trend contributes to the trade deficit and adversely affects the economy. He urged the public to buy gold only as needed and to consider alternative investment options.

PM Modi also expressed concern over the rising imports of cooking oil, particularly palm oil and other edible oils. He noted that a large portion of India's requirements is met through imports, which directly impacts household budgets due to fluctuations in international prices. He encouraged citizens to use oil judiciously and adopt healthier lifestyles.

He emphasized that reducing oil consumption would not only benefit the economy but also improve public health. Health professionals have long warned that excessive oil intake can lead to heart disease, obesity, and other health issues.

The Prime Minister also encouraged farmers to increase oilseed production, aiming for self-sufficiency in edible oils. The government is promoting the cultivation of crops like mustard, soybean, sunflower, and peanuts.

Economic experts believe that controlling gold consumption and cooking oil imports could alleviate pressure on foreign exchange reserves and strengthen India's economic position. They assert that public participation is crucial for the success of initiatives like 'Vocal for Local' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'
