PM Modi Launches Major Infrastructure Projects in Madurai to Boost Economic Growth
Inauguration of Infrastructure Projects
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects exceeding ₹4,400 crores in Madurai. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, improve transportation, and accelerate regional economic development. Addressing the gathering in Madurai, Modi described these projects as a significant chapter in Tamil Nadu's development journey. He stated, "Today's event symbolizes a glorious chapter in Tamil Nadu's progress. We have inaugurated and dedicated projects worth over ₹4,400 crores to the nation. These initiatives will transform connectivity, boost the economy, create jobs, and improve the lives of millions. Better roads will facilitate farmers' access to markets, ensure smooth travel for tourists and pilgrims, and provide efficient transport for businesses."
Investment in Tamil Nadu's Highway Network
Modi highlighted that the Indian government has made substantial investments in Tamil Nadu's highway network over the past 12 years, with more than 4,000 kilometers of highways constructed since 2014. He expressed his happiness in laying the foundation for two major highway projects, which will ease travel for pilgrims and ensure the smooth movement of agricultural and marine products. The Prime Minister noted that the Indian Railways has undergone historic changes in the last decade, particularly visible in Tamil Nadu. Since his government took office, the railway budget allocation has increased ninefold, with over 1,300 kilometers of new railway tracks laid, achieving 97% electrification, and the construction of hundreds of flyovers and underpasses, enhancing safety and efficiency.
Key Highway Projects Launched
Today, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the four-lane construction of the Marakkanam-Puducherry section of NH-332A and the Paramakudi-Ramnathapuram section of NH-87. According to a press release from the Prime Minister's Office, the four-laning of the Marakkanam-Puducherry section will reduce traffic congestion in urban areas of Puducherry and cut travel time by nearly 50%, from one hour to about 30 minutes. This project will provide seamless connectivity between major national and state highways, improving access to key sites such as Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), the Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Station, and Auroville, while strengthening links between coastal villages and Viluppuram district headquarters, thereby promoting tourism and economic activities in the region.
Enhanced Connectivity to Religious Sites
The four-laning of the Paramakudi-Ramnathapuram section of NH-87 will enable quicker access to significant religious sites, including Madurai, Rameswaram, and Dhanushkodi. This project is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 40%, decreasing it from one hour to around 35 minutes. It will enhance multi-modal connectivity by linking major railway stations in Madurai, airports in Madurai and INS Parundu, and non-major ports in Pamban and Rameswaram. In line with the principles of Gati Shakti, this corridor will integrate key economic centers such as fishing hubs, special economic zones, mega food parks, and textile clusters, thereby accelerating trade, industry, and socio-economic development across the region. Additionally, Modi inaugurated railway infrastructure projects aimed at improving passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and strengthening rail connectivity in the state.
