PM Modi Inducts Three Indigenous Naval Vessels in Kolkata
Induction of New Naval Ships
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three new ships designed and built in India for the Indian Navy in Kolkata. The vessels include the advanced stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the survey vessel INS Sanshodhak, and the anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft INS Agray.
Significance of Maritime Power
During the event, PM Modi emphasized the critical role of the sea in development, security, and prosperity. He noted that a significant portion of global business and internet data flows through maritime routes. A nation's maritime strength directly correlates with its economic and strategic influence. The journey that began with INS Vikrant is not just about new warships but also a testament to India's growing self-reliance.
Creating Employment Opportunities in the Maritime Sector
The Prime Minister highlighted that these three ships are 'Made in India,' showcasing the hard work of Indian engineers and laborers. India aims to transition from being merely a buyer in the defense sector to becoming a manufacturer. Over the past few years, more than 40 indigenous warships and submarines have been inducted into the Navy, with 45 new naval platforms currently under construction. Building a modern ship requires hundreds of tons of steel and electronics, generating thousands of jobs. The construction of the three newly inducted ships involved over 200 small industries, creating substantial employment.
Mega Package for the Shipping Sector
PM Modi announced that India is entering a new phase of maritime power. Shipbuilding, repairing, and recycling are being treated as a national mission. The announced incentive package of ₹70,000 crores for the shipping sector represents a significant investment in India's maritime future. Initiatives like Sagarmala are modernizing ports and expanding river waterways, thereby reducing trade costs.
Record Achievements in Defense Production and Exports
India was once recognized as the world's largest defense importer, which posed security challenges. However, significant policy reforms have been implemented since 2014. The total defense production, which was around ₹40,000 crores in 2014, has now surged to approximately ₹1,80,000 crores. Similarly, defense exports, which were merely ₹700 crores, have skyrocketed to nearly ₹40,000 crores. Indian-made defense equipment is now being exported to over 80 countries worldwide.
West Bengal as a Hub for Blue Economy
PM Modi stated that West Bengal will play a crucial role in India's new maritime era. The region possesses the necessary skills to elevate its maritime economy, manufacturing, and logistics to new heights. He concluded by asserting that while India views the sea as a medium for cooperation, maintaining peace also requires strength. The three ships inducted today symbolize this new, confident India.
