New Delhi, July 24: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to activist Sonam Wangchuk, encouraging him to heed medical guidance and focus on his recovery following a 26-day hunger strike.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi stated, “I urge Sonam ji to adhere to the doctors’ recommendations in his daily life and regain his previous health as swiftly as possible. I pray for his well-being.” This statement came shortly after Wangchuk ended his fast at Safdarjung Hospital, where he was surrounded by Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders from the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh, medical staff, and family members.
Additionally, PM Modi announced that the Central government has drafted a detailed Bill aimed at implementing stricter regulations and harsher penalties for cases involving paper leaks.
This proposal is set to be reviewed in the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday and is anticipated to be introduced and approved during the current session of Parliament next week.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike garnered significant national attention, prompting leaders from various political factions and civil society organizations to urge him to conclude his fast.
Previously, Wangchuk mentioned that 65 Members of Parliament had either visited him or sent letters advocating for him to end his fast, expressing concerns about potential unrest.
He indicated that his decision to end the fast followed extensive discussions regarding conditions and underscored the importance of preventing any form of violence.
The conclusion of this fast signifies the end of one of the most prolonged hunger strikes by a notable activist in recent times, shedding light on the political sensitivity surrounding Ladakh’s demands and the ongoing discourse regarding governance and environmental protections in the area.
