Victoria, June 28: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the critical significance of the Indian Ocean, emphasizing that its security, sustainability, and prosperity are collective responsibilities of all nations. He articulated India's vision of transforming the region into an "Ocean of Opportunity."

During a joint press conference with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie following their bilateral discussions, Modi expressed that the Indian Ocean should act as a conduit for economic development, maritime security, and regional collaboration.

"We regard the Indian Ocean as our shared home. Its security, sustainability, and prosperity are our mutual responsibility. This belief underpins our MAHASAGAR vision," Modi stated.

He further elaborated, "The essence of my visit to Seychelles is straightforward - India envisions an Indian Ocean where economic growth is aligned with maritime security; where our partnerships are founded on mutual respect and trust rather than size; and where we progress not just in proximity but together. Our goal is to transform the Indian Ocean into an Ocean of Opportunity."

Modi also reflected on the longstanding relationship between India and Seychelles, noting that the Indian Ocean has historically facilitated trade, cultural exchanges, and connections between the two nations.

This visit coincided with two notable events: the 50th anniversary of Seychelles' independence and five decades of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Modi also announced initiatives aimed at enhancing economic ties, improving connectivity, and expanding collaboration in digital public infrastructure.

During the visit, President Herminie honored Modi with the title of "Guardian of the Blue Horizon," marking the Prime Minister's 34th international accolade from a foreign country.

In response to the honor, Modi dedicated the recognition to nations striving to combat climate change.

"While graciously accepting this honor, I dedicate it to all countries addressing climate change and viewing environmental conservation as a responsibility towards future generations," he remarked.

Earlier on Saturday, Modi arrived in Seychelles for a three-day visit.

In addition to engaging in delegation-level discussions with President Herminie, he is set to participate in Seychelles' National Day golden jubilee celebrations as the Guest of Honour on Monday, address the National Assembly, and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

The two leaders also assessed the full range of bilateral cooperation and exchanged perspectives on regional and international matters of shared interest.

In a demonstration of increasing maritime collaboration, the Prime Minister presented a Made-in-India fast patrol vessel to the Seychelles Coast Guard, reaffirming New Delhi's commitment to bolstering the island nation's maritime security capabilities in the strategically vital Indian Ocean region.
