PM Modi Commemorates Rajendra Chola I with Special Coin Release in Tamil Nadu
Celebrating Chola Heritage
During a recent two-day trip to Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Modi unveiled a commemorative coin in honor of Rajendra Chola I, coinciding with the emperor's birth anniversary. This initiative was in response to a request from R. Komagan, the Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust. Additionally, Modi participated in a roadshow in Tiruchirappalli.
Historical Significance of the Chola Empire
While addressing the audience in Tiruchirappalli, PM Modi remarked, "Historians regard the Chola Empire as one of India's golden eras. This empire exemplified India's tradition as the Mother of Democracy. While many refer to Britain's Magna Carta in discussions of democracy, the Chola Empire practiced democratic elections centuries ago. Unlike many rulers who returned with riches from conquests, Rajendra Chola brought back Gangajal..."
Diplomatic Relations of the Chola Kings
He further noted, "The Chola rulers significantly improved their diplomatic and trade ties with regions like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Southeast Asia. Coincidentally, I just returned from the Maldives yesterday, and today I am honored to be part of this event..."
Cultural Connections and Spiritual Significance
Modi expressed his joy in bringing Gangajal from Kashi, stating, "As a representative from Kashi, I feel a deep connection with Maa Ganga. The achievements of the Chola kings and their legacy invigorate the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'..."
A Land of Faith
He concluded with a heartfelt statement, "This is the land of faith of Rajaraja, and Ilaiyaraaja has immersed us all in devotion to Shiva on this sacred ground... As an MP from Kashi, hearing 'Om Namah Shivaya' gives me goosebumps."
