New Delhi, April 26: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the Northeast as "Ashtalakshmi" for the nation, emphasizing the region's remarkable progress across various sectors following the amendments made to outdated British laws in 2017.
During the 133rd episode of his monthly radio show, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi remarked, "The Northeast is akin to Ashtalakshmi for all of us. This region is brimming with talent, and its natural beauty captivates everyone. We have frequently highlighted the accomplishments of the Northeast's people in 'Mann Ki Baat.'"
He pointed out the significant advancements in the bamboo industry, stating, "What was once seen as a burden is now a catalyst for employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Our mothers and sisters are the primary beneficiaries. You would be amazed at the transformation brought about by redefining bamboo."
According to PM Modi, bamboo was previously classified as a tree under British law, which imposed stringent regulations that complicated its transportation.
"Consequently, many individuals distanced themselves from bamboo-related enterprises. However, by amending the law in 2017, we reclassified bamboo, leading to visible improvements. Today, the bamboo industry is thriving across the Northeast, with continuous innovation and value addition," he explained.
He shared the stories of Bijoy Sutradhar from Gomati district and Pradeep Chakraborty from South Tripura, who recognized the new laws as a "significant opportunity" and integrated technology into their work. "They are now producing superior bamboo products than ever before," he noted.
In Dimapur and nearby regions of Nagaland, PM Modi mentioned several Self-Help Groups enhancing bamboo-based food products. Additionally, teams like Khorolo Creative Crafts are engaged in creating bamboo furniture and handicrafts.
In Mizoram's Mamit district, initiatives are underway focusing on bamboo tissue culture and poly-house management. He also highlighted the Lagastal Bamboo Enterprise Team near Gangtok in Sikkim, which crafts handicrafts, incense sticks, furniture, and interior decor items from bamboo.
"These are just a few examples. The success stories within the bamboo sector are extensive. I encourage everyone to consider purchasing bamboo products from the Northeast, even as gifts. Your support will uplift those dedicated to crafting bamboo items," the Prime Minister concluded.
