On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his Mann Ki Baat radio session by highlighting the recent successes of Indian athletes in track and field. He noted that the national record for the 100-meter sprint was shattered three times within just two days at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026 held in Ranchi.

Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur Share Their Journey

During the program, PM Modi engaged with sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur, who discussed their training, camaraderie, and the spirit of healthy competition. Gurindervir Singh, a member of the Indian Navy, proudly declared himself the fastest sprinter in the country, having set a new national record by completing the 100-meter dash in an impressive 10.09 seconds. He reminisced about his childhood when his mother urged him to prioritize studies over television, promising her that she would one day see him on TV. "Today, I feel immense joy when she watches me compete on television," Gurindervir shared.

Gurindervir Singh Makes History

Earlier this month, Gurindervir achieved a remarkable time of 10.09 seconds at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026, becoming the first Indian male athlete to break the 10.10-second barrier in this prestigious event. His outstanding performance not only set a new national record but also earned him a spot in both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

Gurindervir's record-breaking run was the highlight of a thrilling day in Ranchi. He initially clocked 10.17 seconds in the semifinals, briefly setting a new national record, only to have Animesh Kujur surpass him with a time of 10.15 seconds shortly after. However, in the final, Gurindervir reclaimed the record decisively with his historic finish of 10.09 seconds, securing his place alongside Animesh for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Sports Minister Applauds Gurindervir's Achievement

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended his congratulations to Gurindervir after he became the first Indian to clock under 10.10 seconds in the men's 100m event. "10.09 seconds! Gurindervir Singh, you have made history. The entire nation is immensely proud of you!" Mandaviya expressed in a post on social media.
