PM Modi Advocates for Women's Reservation in Democratic Framework
Strengthening Democracy Through Women's Participation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of women's reservation within the democratic framework. While addressing the Nari Shakti Vandan conference in New Delhi, he stated that the involvement of women significantly strengthens the nation's democracy. He acknowledged the crucial contributions made by Indian women and announced that a special session of Parliament's budget session will commence on the 16th of this month.
A New Era for Women's Representation
Modi remarked that the Parliament is on the verge of creating a new history, one that will fulfill past aspirations and future commitments. He envisions an equitable India where social justice is not merely a slogan but an integral part of our decision-making processes. The long-awaited moment for state assemblies and the national Parliament will arrive on April 16, 17, and 18. In 2023, the Nari Shakti Vandan Act was introduced in the new Parliament, and to ensure its timely implementation, a special meeting of the budget session will take place starting April 16.
Acknowledging Women's Contributions
The Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the women present from all corners of the country for their participation in this significant initiative. He congratulated all Indian women on the dawn of a new era. Modi pointed out that the need for women's reservation in the democratic structure has been recognized for decades, with discussions spanning nearly four decades involving efforts from various political parties. He noted that in 2023, the Nari Shakti Vandan Act was unanimously passed, with a strong consensus that it should be implemented by 2029.
Collaboration for Progress
Modi reiterated that the approach this time should be through dialogue, cooperation, and participation. He expressed confidence that, similar to the passage of the Act, collective efforts would elevate the dignity of Parliament to new heights. Currently, women hold significant positions in the country, including the President and the Finance Minister, enhancing the nation's pride. He highlighted the exemplary role of women in local governance, with over 1.4 million women successfully serving in local government bodies, and in about 21 states, their participation in panchayats has reached nearly 50%.
Impact of Women's Involvement
Modi noted that the active participation of millions of women in politics and social life often surprises global leaders and political experts, significantly boosting India's prestige. Studies have shown that increased female participation in decision-making processes leads to greater sensitivity in governance. He recalled that in 2014, millions of women in India had never even entered a bank. With the launch of the Jan Dhan Yojana, over 32 crore women opened bank accounts, thus benefiting from the banking sector.
