PM Modi Addresses Rising Tensions in the Middle East During Rajya Sabha Session
Prime Minister's Address on Middle East Crisis
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha regarding the escalating situation in the Middle East. Speaking during the budget session, he labeled the conflict as a "global concern" and warned that its economic and diplomatic repercussions could be felt for an extended period.
Government's Vigilance and Preparedness
He emphasized that the government remains fully alert and is taking all necessary measures to safeguard India's interests. Modi pointed out that the ongoing war has disrupted India's trade routes and shared details about the government's preparations to tackle a potential energy crisis. He reiterated that the conflict in the region has become a matter of global concern.
Impact on Global Energy Supply
Continuing his speech, PM Modi noted that the conflict is affecting the supply of petrol, diesel, and gas worldwide. "India is in constant communication with all countries involved in or affected by this war... We urge all parties to cease hostilities and work towards reducing tensions in the region. This war has created a serious energy crisis globally, which is alarming for India as well," he stated.
Engagement with Western Asian Leaders
The Prime Minister mentioned that India has maintained ongoing dialogue with the United States. He informed the house that he has held two rounds of discussions with leaders from Western Asian countries. Modi highlighted the increasing difficulties in the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most crucial maritime routes, stressing that India is making every effort to ensure a steady supply of oil, gas, and fertilizers.
Escalating Global Energy Crisis
Modi further elaborated that the conflict in the Middle East has persisted for over three weeks, leading to a significant energy crisis worldwide. He expressed concern for India, as trade routes have been disrupted, affecting the regular supply of petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilizers. "Approximately 10 million Indians reside and work in Gulf countries... Their safety and livelihood are of utmost concern for India... Many ships are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, with a large number of Indian crew members aboard, which is also a significant worry for us. In such challenging times, it is essential for India's upper house to raise a united voice for peace and dialogue," he added.
Evacuation of Indian Citizens
The Prime Minister stated that India prioritizes the safety of its citizens during the conflict in the Middle East. He reported that over 375,000 Indians have been safely evacuated, including more than 1,000 from Iran. Modi urged all parties to seek a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that any threat to human life in this war is against the interests of humanity. "In times of crisis, the safety of Indians both domestically and abroad is our top priority. Since the onset of the war, over 375,000 Indians have safely returned to India, including more than 700 students studying medicine from Iran. Our government is working with utmost sensitivity during this crisis," he remarked.
Ongoing Conflict in Western Asia
The fourth week of the ongoing conflict in Western Asia has begun, disrupting trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions escalated following the assassination of Iran's 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28. In retaliation, Iran targeted Israeli and American installations in several Gulf countries, further obstructing maritime routes and impacting international energy markets and global economic stability.
