Washington, Aug 19: Pia Dandiya, an educator of Indian-American descent, has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, paving the way for a significant election in November that may influence the balance of power in the US House of Representatives.
In the primary held on Tuesday, Dandiya garnered 61.3% of the votes, defeating attorney Kaysia Earley. She is set to compete against Republican Casey Askar, a businessman and Marine veteran, in the general election scheduled for November 3.
Askar claimed the Republican nomination with 24% of the votes in a competitive field of seven candidates. Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Michael Carbonara followed closely with 20.6%, while university administrator Belinda Keiser received 20.2%.
Expressing her gratitude in a victory speech, Dandiya stated, “I am so thrilled and honoured to be your Democratic nominee for US Congress here in my home state of Florida.”
She extended her heartfelt thanks to voters, volunteers, and supporters of her campaign, emphasizing the importance of their belief in her mission.
Dandiya highlighted that her campaign is entering a new phase aimed at advocating for working families and redefining public service in Florida.
If she wins the election, Dandiya would make history as the first South Asian American to represent Florida in Congress.
Raised in Palm Beach County by Indian immigrant parents, Dandiya is a first-generation American. She began her professional journey as a teacher and, at just 28, founded a high school in Harlem, becoming one of the youngest principals in the nation.
Her campaign claims that every student from her school gained admission to college, despite 86% coming from low-income backgrounds.
Dandiya has also served as a White House Fellow with the Domestic Policy Council and the Department of Education, and later led educational initiatives at Apple focusing on education, healthcare, and state government.
The Democratic National Committee has congratulated Dandiya, recognizing the district as a key opportunity for the party to secure a House seat.
DNC Chair Ken Martin praised Dandiya's commitment to expanding opportunities and advocating for working families, stating, “She is ready to fight in Congress to lower the costs of groceries, healthcare, and housing for South Florida families.”
Dandiya's campaign platform includes initiatives to reduce household expenses, support universal pre-kindergarten, enhance public education, expand vocational training, and safeguard Social Security, Medicare, and reproductive rights.
The newly redrawn district encompasses parts of Broward, Palm Beach, Hendry, and Collier counties and became an open seat after Democratic Representative Lois Frankel opted to run in the adjacent 23rd District.
According to the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball, the district is leaning Republican. In the 2024 elections, Donald Trump received approximately 54.6% of the vote in the new boundaries, while Joe Biden had 51% four years prior. Both major parties have prioritized this seat in their election strategies.
