Peter Magyar Sworn in as Hungary's New Prime Minister, Ending Orbán's 16-Year Rule
A New Era Begins in Hungary
On Saturday, Peter Magyar took the oath of office as Hungary's Prime Minister, marking the conclusion of Viktor Orbán's 16-year authoritarian regime. Magyar's center-right Tisza Party achieved a surprising victory last month, defeating Orbán's nationalist Fidesz Party.
In this election, Tisza secured a two-thirds majority in parliament, enabling the reversal of several policies that critics labeled as authoritarian under Orbán's leadership. After taking the oath, Magyar addressed the parliament, stating that he intends to use his position not to 'rule' Hungary but to 'serve' his country.
Magyar expressed, 'I am not standing here because I am different from anyone else in the country. I am here because millions of Hungarians have decided to bring about change. The trust we have received is both an honor and a moral obligation, as well as an incredible feeling.'
It is anticipated that Magyar's administration will alter Hungary's political dynamics with the European Union. The former Prime Minister had frequently vetoed significant decisions, including recent support measures for neighboring Ukraine.
