Peace Talks in Islamabad Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict
Efforts to Resolve the Middle East Crisis Intensify
Tehran: As the conflict in the Middle East marks its 25th day, there is a noticeable increase in efforts aimed at achieving peace. Recent reports suggest that attention is now turning towards Pakistan, where peace negotiations may be scheduled to occur in Islamabad. According to sources cited by Reuters, these discussions could take place as early as this week. A European official has indicated that Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, and Gulf nations are facilitating communication between Iran and the United States.
On Monday, Iranian media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the war's regional implications. An Israeli official has also confirmed that talks between Iran and the US are expected to happen in Islamabad this week, with US Vice President JD Vance potentially representing Washington.
White House's Position on the Talks: In response to the news regarding the Islamabad peace talks, US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that nothing is finalized yet. She emphasized that no concrete information could be provided at this time regarding the potential meeting involving US Vice President JD Vance, US Special Presidential Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff, and former Senior Advisor Jared Kushner with Iranian officials. Leavitt noted that these discussions are sensitive and should not be considered final until officially announced by the White House.
Trump's Remarks on Iran Negotiations: The emergence of peace talks follows US President Donald Trump's announcement on Monday of a temporary halt to planned military actions against Iranian energy facilities, citing 'very good and productive conversations' with Iran over the preceding days. In a formal statement, Trump declared that the US has opted to delay 'any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure' for five days. He expressed satisfaction with the constructive nature of the discussions, which are set to continue throughout the week.
Trump added, 'Based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period, contingent on the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions. Thank you for your attention to this matter.'
It is important to note that the US-Israel conflict with Iran has now entered its fourth week, having commenced on February 28 with joint airstrikes by the US and Israel. The situation has escalated to involve the broader Middle East, with Iran responding through missile and drone strikes targeting oil and gas facilities across the Gulf, including in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE.
