Supreme Court Grants Bail to Pawan Khera
Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera expressed his gratitude on Saturday for the Supreme Court's decision to grant him anticipatory bail in a case related to alleged fraud and defamation. He described this relief as a warning to those who misuse state power. Speaking to reporters, Khera thanked the Supreme Court and the leadership of his party, stating that this ruling reinforces the rule of law.
Khera further remarked, "I thank the honorable Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law... My bail is not just a personal victory and source of relief, but also a warning to those who abuse state power that as long as we remain a constitutional democracy, personal freedoms cannot be sacrificed for political vendettas. No matter how terrible the lies may seem, truth ultimately prevails. Satyamev Jayate!"
Just yesterday, the Supreme Court of India provided him protection from arrest concerning allegations of targeting Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with forged documents. The bench, comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar, noted that the controversy currently appears politically motivated and does not justify custodial interrogation. The court stated that the veracity of the allegations would be examined during the trial proceedings.
While granting anticipatory bail, the Supreme Court instructed Khera to fully cooperate with the investigation and appear before authorities as required. The court also prohibited him from influencing witnesses, tampering with evidence, or traveling abroad without prior court approval. The judge further commented that statements made by both parties, including the Chief Minister, indicate the political nature of the dispute. However, the court clarified that its remarks are limited to the bail proceedings and will not affect the final outcome of the case.
