Automatic Qualification for Asian Games Medallists

Medallists from the 2026 Asian Games will automatically qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. They will also gain direct entry to the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, which is the first qualifying event for the upcoming Olympic Games.

BFI's Comprehensive Selection Strategy

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has unveiled a detailed selection policy aimed at maximizing the number of boxers qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This policy outlines a four-stage pathway based on the qualification framework established by World Boxing and sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The qualification process includes the 2027 World Boxing Championships as the initial event, followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.

Transparent Selection Criteria

In line with the selection criteria released on December 8, 2025, the BFI has published the updated Selection Criteria for 2027-28 to ensure fairness and transparency in the selection process.

Selection for Main and Reserve Entries

According to the BFI's announcement, medallists from the 2026 Asian Games will be prioritized as main entries in their respective weight classes. Additionally, gold medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships will act as reserve entries in those categories. For weight classes where India does not secure a medal at the Asian Games, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as the main entry.

Qualification Process and Training Camp Information

Boxers who reach the quota bout round but do not secure a quota place at the World Championships will automatically qualify for the Asian Qualifiers. Remaining slots will be filled through a Ranking Selection Trial among Elite National Camp participants, who will enter the National Coaching Camp via designated pathways.

A similar selection process will be implemented for the two World Qualifying Tournaments scheduled in 2028, which will take place in Italy and Hungary.

BFI President Ajay Singh stated, 'This policy has been designed to provide our boxers with a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, focusing on consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and World Boxing’s qualification events.'

The National Coaching Camp will commence with medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists, and any wild cards selected by the BFI Selection Committee, as outlined in the policy. For non-Olympic weight categories, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be the main entry for the 2027 World Championships, while the silver medallist will serve as the reserve.
