Conclusion of the Winter Session
On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met with political leaders and Members of Parliament in his office to mark the end of the 2025 Winter Session. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen enjoying tea next to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the gathering. Other MPs, including Cabinet Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Chirag Paswan, were present as well. The atmosphere was light-hearted, with MPs sharing laughter and sipping tea.
During this time, following the opposition's protests against the VB-G RAM G Bill, Speaker Om Birla announced the indefinite adjournment of the Lok Sabha after the national anthem was played. Prime Minister Modi, who had just returned from a three-country tour, was present in the house. The Rajya Sabha, led by Chairman and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, was also adjourned shortly after resuming at 11 AM. Prior to the adjournment, statements and reports were presented on the floor of the house.
While adjourning the Rajya Sabha indefinitely, Radhakrishnan remarked that the conduct of members during the minister's response, which included protests and paper tearing, was unbecoming for the house. The opposition continued its vocal dissent against the VB-G RAM G Bill, with a united front protesting outside Parliament, while members of the Trinamool Congress demonstrated on the steps at the entrance of the house.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, currently in Germany, criticized the bill, labeling it as deliberately anti-national and anti-rural. In a post on X, he stated that the Modi government dismantled two decades of MGNREGA history in just one day. He argued that the VB-G RAM G is not a 'restructuring' of MGNREGA but transforms it into a ration scheme controlled from Delhi, eliminating the rights-based, demand-driven guarantees. He emphasized that the previous scheme empowered rural workers and strengthened rural livelihoods.
