Parliamentary Language Committee Inspects Indian Maritime University in Kolkata
Inspection of Indian Maritime University
On June 30, 2026, the first subcommittee of the Parliamentary Language Committee conducted an inspection of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) located in Kolkata. The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the implementation of the language policy and the progressive use of Hindi in governmental operations.
The delegation was led by the committee's vice-chairman and Lok Sabha MP, Mr. Bhartuhari Mahtab, along with the subcommittee's convener, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Dinesh Sharma. Other members included Mr. Satypal Brahmachari, Mr. Kishori Lal Sharma, and Mr. Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, along with senior officials from the committee's secretariat and other esteemed MPs. During the inspection, the committee thoroughly reviewed the implementation of the language policy at IMU. The members praised the efforts made by the Kolkata campus to promote the progressive use of Hindi in governmental tasks and provided significant suggestions and guidance to further strengthen the use of the language.
Present at the event were Dr. Malini V. Shankar, Vice-Chancellor of IMU, Dr. Raju Balaji, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, K. Saravanan, the Registrar, and Rear Admiral (Retd) Amit Bose, the Director of the Kolkata campus, along with other officials and staff. Reaffirming their commitment to the objectives of the language policy, the IMU Kolkata campus expressed its determination to enhance the use of Hindi in official correspondence, administrative tasks, and daily office activities. Additionally, the university reiterated its commitment to maintaining excellence in maritime education, training, and research.
The Indian Maritime University (IMU), headquartered in Chennai, was established on November 14, 2008, as a central university. Its creation aimed to integrate seven prestigious maritime institutions to provide world-class maritime education, training, and research. Currently, the university operates undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and Ph.D. programs through its campuses in Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam. Additionally, there are 17 affiliated maritime training institutes.
