Parliament Session Highlights: Foreign Minister Jaishankar Addresses Middle East Crisis
Overview of the Parliamentary Proceedings
On Monday, the Lok Sabha session concluded without any significant actions apart from Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar's remarks regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Jaishankar informed both houses about the government's efforts to assist Indian citizens stranded in Gulf countries due to the ongoing crisis. During his statement, opposition members staged vigorous protests in both houses, demanding a discussion on the issue, but their requests were overlooked. Central Minister J.P. Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the opposition's behavior in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Additionally, both houses congratulated the Indian cricket team for their T20 World Cup victory and wished the players success in future matches.
Jaishankar's Statement on the Middle East Crisis
In his address to the Lok Sabha, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis in the Middle East. He stated that ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in the region and protecting national interests are top priorities for the Indian government. Following a significant military strike by the U.S. and Israel on Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the conflict has escalated. Reports indicate that at least 1,230 individuals have died in Iran, 397 in Lebanon, and 11 in Israel due to the ongoing war. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the Middle East and described the decision to allow an Iranian vessel to dock at an Indian port on humanitarian grounds as a correct move.
Lok Sabha Proceedings
During the Lok Sabha session, opposition members created a ruckus demanding a discussion on the Middle East crisis, leading to the suspension of proceedings twice before the house was adjourned for the day. Due to the opposition's insistence, the discussion and voting process regarding a notice to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla could not commence. After two adjournments, the session resumed at 3 PM, where the presiding officer Jagdambika Pal asked Congress MP Mohammad Javed to present his resolution against the Speaker. Meanwhile, opposition members, including Congress, gathered near the podium, chanting slogans for a discussion on the situation in the Middle East, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking permission to speak.
Rajya Sabha Proceedings
Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu informed the Rajya Sabha that the investigation into the crash of Air India's flight AI171, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London-Gatwick last June, is progressing rapidly, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report will be released soon.
Central Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda accused opposition members of creating 'chaos' during Foreign Minister Jaishankar's statement on the situation in the Middle East, as Congress and other opposition members protested and walked out of the house.
Concerns Over Rising Road Accidents
On the issue of increasing road accidents in the country, BJP's Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni expressed concern in the Rajya Sabha, noting that 60% of those who lose their lives in such incidents are aged between 18 and 32, a demographic that significantly contributes to the nation's development. She raised this issue during zero hour, highlighting the alarming rise in road accidents, with over 180,000 fatalities reported in 2024.
