Parliament Proceedings: Key Discussions and Developments in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

The recent sessions of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha saw significant discussions on various issues, including the smooth conduct of the question hour, demands for fare concessions, and the introduction of a revised 'Stand-Up India' scheme. Opposition parties raised concerns over suspensions and shortages of cooking gas, while the government highlighted achievements in the railway sector and measures to address potential oil crises. Key figures from both sides engaged in debates, reflecting the dynamic nature of parliamentary proceedings.

Smooth Proceedings in Lok Sabha

During the second phase of the budget session, the question hour, which had been disrupted for several days due to opposition uproar, was conducted smoothly for the first time on Monday. As the session commenced, some Congress members attempted to raise their issues. However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla indicated that they would have the opportunity to speak after the question hour concluded. There was a demand in the Lok Sabha to restore fare concessions for senior citizens, journalists, and persons with disabilities. The ruling party in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress, staged a one-day walkout from the Rajya Sabha in protest against the Election Commission's decision to remove top bureaucrats, including Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, just hours after announcing the assembly election schedule.

Highlights from Lok Sabha Discussions

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) highlighted the achievements related to Indian Railways during the Lok Sabha session on Monday, asserting that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made the impossible possible in the railway sector. BJP MP Ganesh Singh participated in discussions regarding the budgetary demands for the Ministry of Railways for the year 2026-27, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the progress made in the last decade. He stated, 'What seemed impossible in railways has now become a reality.'

Congress Raises Suspension Issue

The Congress party brought up the suspension of eight opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha, urging Speaker Om Birla to revoke their suspensions. Senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal raised this issue in the house, stating, 'Our eight members have been suspended and are sitting outside the house. We have raised this issue before... We request you to make a decision today.' In response, Birla remarked, 'You are a senior member. Discussions on the house's decisions do not occur within the house.'

Finance Minister Announces New Initiative

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Lok Sabha on Monday that the government will soon introduce a revised 'Stand-Up India' scheme aimed at benefiting members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST) communities and women who wish to start new enterprises. Launched in 2016, the 'Stand-Up India' initiative aims to empower SC-ST and women entrepreneurs by facilitating bank loans for establishing new ventures. This scheme is set to conclude on March 31, 2025.

Concerns Raised in Rajya Sabha

Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, expressed concerns regarding the alleged shortage of cooking gas (LPG) in the country, accusing the government of failing to take timely measures to prevent the crisis and control black marketing. In response, the Leader of the House and Union Minister J.P. Nadda countered that the opposition, particularly the Congress, is attempting to create 'chaos' in the country instead of standing with the government during a crisis.

Taxation Issues Discussed

In the Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member Raghav Chadha raised the issue of income tax returns, suggesting that married couples should be treated as a single entity for tax purposes. He provided examples to support his argument, stating that under the current system, two families with the same income face different tax liabilities. He argued that the new system would benefit both the government and families filing returns.

Government's Response to Oil Crisis

BJP MP Arun Singh claimed in the Rajya Sabha that the Indian government has taken timely measures to avoid an oil and gas crisis in light of the current situation in West Asia. He noted that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives, Indian oil tankers have been allowed to pass through the Hormuz Strait without any hindrance.

Focus on Aviation Sector Growth

Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu stated on Monday that the government is working to promote manufacturing activities in the rapidly growing aviation sector, with Indian companies collaborating with foreign firms to establish plants. Naidu made these remarks while responding to supplementary questions during the question hour in the Rajya Sabha.
