Extension of Joint Committee's Term

The Parliament has decided to extend the term of the Joint Committee (JPC) reviewing the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which includes provisions for the removal of Prime Ministers, central ministers, and chief ministers under serious allegations if they remain in custody for 30 consecutive days. This extension will last until the first day of the final week of the winter session. The chairperson of the committee, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, proposed this extension to allow more time for reporting on the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Union Territory Government (Amendment) Bill 2025. The proposal was accepted by the house through a voice vote.

Previously, on July 17, the committee had decided to postpone the adoption of its draft report. Chairperson Aparajita Sarangi indicated that members felt further discussion was necessary, leading to this decision. The Joint Committee was established on November 12, 2025.

Home Minister Amit Shah introduced these bills during the last part of the monsoon session last year amidst opposition protests and disruptions. Following his proposal, the house decided to refer all three bills to the Joint Committee for further examination.
