Para Elan Launches at Thyagaraj Sports Complex to Promote Disability Awareness
Introduction to Para Elan
The Thyagaraj Sports Complex recently hosted the inaugural event of Para Elan, an initiative that engaged 300 students from both government and private schools in Delhi. This program aims to enhance understanding of disabilities through direct experiences. Launched in April 2026, Para Elan was established following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Gregor Trumel, Country Director of the French Institute in India, and Satya Parkash Sangwan, Vice-President of the Paralympic Committee of India, with the presence of H.E. Thierry Mathou, the French Ambassador to India.
Goals and Reach of the Initiative
Inspired by the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, Para Elan aims to reach over 10,000 students across India in the next three years. The initiative combines French language education through the IFI's 'French for All, French for a Better Future' program with para sports and global citizenship education.
Diverse Participation
The participating students, from Grades 7 to 9, were evenly split between those enrolled in the French programs at six CM Shri government schools and four private schools with established French language curricula. This initiative was crafted to encourage meaningful interactions among students from varied educational backgrounds, fostering a sense of community.
Experiencing Para-Sports
Students engaged in various para-sports activities such as one-legged badminton, blind goalpost, wheelchair table tennis, and wheelchair cricket, allowing them to experience the challenges faced by para-athletes. Additionally, a creative workshop was held in collaboration with The Junior Age, a prominent children's newspaper in India, where students reflected on their experiences and interviewed para-athletes, with selected works to be published.
Inspiration from Para Athletes
The event featured interactions with notable para-athletes, including Paralympic medallist Sharad Kumar and world record holder Shams Alam. Their stories of resilience and determination provided students with unique insights into the world of para sports, reinforcing Para Elan's message that sports can break barriers and foster inclusivity.
Leadership Support
Representatives from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Department of Education, and the Paralympic Committee of India attended the event, alongside a motivational video message from French officials. The transition of Para Elan from concept to reality was highlighted by Ambassador Thierry Mathou, who emphasized the importance of inclusion in education and sports.
A Vision for the Future
Payal Bansal Kanodia, Chairperson of the Paralympic Committee of India, expressed the transformative power of education and sports in shaping compassionate societies. She highlighted that Para Elan is not just about introducing para sports but about redefining perceptions of ability and resilience. The initiative aims to inspire students to embrace diversity and recognize that true excellence is defined by character and spirit.
Conclusion
Para Elan seeks to do more than raise awareness; it aims to integrate the values of inclusion, resilience, equality, and excellence into educational frameworks. The initiative is supported by M3M Foundation, and its impact is expected to resonate well beyond the event itself.
