Javed Justifies Significant Squad Changes

Aaqib Javed, the national selector for Pakistan, has defended the extensive changes made to the squad prior to the third Test against England at Edgbaston. He also suggested that action might be taken against batter Imam-ul-Haq, who is facing allegations of faking an injury.

In a significant shake-up, Pakistan altered nearly half of their Test squad and dismissed head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed along with bowling coach Umar Gul after suffering heavy losses in the first two Tests against England. Following a 194-run defeat in the second Test, which gave England a 2-0 series lead, these changes were deemed necessary.

During an appearance on the Geo News program 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath', Javed stated that the selection committee is accountable for the squad's composition, while the captain and head coach are responsible for the match strategies.

Javed mentioned that he had advised captain Babar Azam and coach Sarfaraz Ahmed to include pacer Ubaid Shah to diversify the bowling attack, but this suggestion was not implemented. He expressed that with the series already lost, introducing new talent at Edgbaston could showcase Pakistan's cricketing prowess.

He further justified the decision to release seven players mid-series, emphasizing the importance of performance and accountability among established players. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released players including Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq after the defeat at Lord's.

Imam-ul-Haq's Injury Controversy

Regarding the allegations that Imam-ul-Haq faked a calf injury, which caused him to miss both innings but still participate in throwdowns on day four, Javed raised concerns about the legitimacy of the injury. He noted that it is questionable for a player to be unable to bat due to a muscle pull while still being able to take throwdowns.

Javed remarked, "Players have played with plasters on before. This is unfortunate, and action will be taken," highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Misbah-ul-Haq Resigns from Selection Committee

In a related development, former captain Misbah-ul-Haq has resigned from the Pakistan men's national selection committee following the PCB's decision to overhaul the Test squad and coaching staff during the ongoing England tour.

Reports indicate that the PCB has yet to accept Misbah's resignation. He has also chosen to step down from his role as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

PCB Requests Clarifications from Selectors

The PCB has sought explanations from the selectors regarding the inclusion of Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq. A notice was issued on the same day the board announced the dismissal of seven players and two coaches ahead of the third Test.

The selection committee has been asked to provide a written explanation within 24 hours, detailing the rationale behind Rizwan and Imam's selections.

Despite being Pakistan's leading Test run-scorer from the start of 2024 until the West Indies tour, Rizwan's inclusion has come under scrutiny. Imam, who played only two Tests during that period, had been a top performer in domestic cricket.
