Pakistan PM Expresses Condolences Over Khamenei's Death Amid Controversy

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed condolences over the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following US and Israeli airstrikes. His statement, however, has drawn criticism for not directly naming the United States, leading to a wave of reactions on social media. Users questioned his sincerity and highlighted the contradiction between his condolences and Pakistan's ties with Washington. This incident comes shortly after Sharif attended a meeting with President Trump, where he praised the US leader. The situation raises questions about international law and diplomatic relations in the region.

Condolences from Pakistan's Leadership

Islamabad: On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan conveyed his condolences following the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel. Sharif expressed his concerns regarding the "breach of international law norms" in the aftermath of Khamenei's assassination. However, he faced criticism online for not explicitly naming the United States in his statement. In a post on X, he stated, "The Government and the people of Pakistan stand with the Iranian populace during this time of mourning and extend heartfelt condolences on the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei." He further added, "Pakistan also voices its concern over the infringement of international law norms. It is a long-standing principle that heads of state should not be targeted. We pray for the departed soul and ask Allah to grant the Iranian people the strength to endure this profound loss."

Public Reaction to Sharif's Statement

Criticism from Netizens: Social media users quickly reacted to Sharif's condolences, pointing out the omission of the United States. One user remarked, "Why are you so afraid to name Donald Trump, whom you nominated for a Nobel Prize despite knowing his intentions towards Iran and Khamenei?" Another user questioned, "How do you reconcile these 'sincere condolences' with your administration’s dependence on Washington? You can’t advocate for international law while seeking approval from the White House. This balancing act is becoming increasingly obvious." A different user added, "You are shameless! Go and nominate Trump for another Nobel."

Sharif's Recent Engagements

Meeting with Trump: Just prior to the attack on Iran, Sharif attended a meeting in Washington, DC, hosted by US President Donald Trump, known as the Board of Peace. This gathering aimed to explore collaborative efforts to resolve major conflicts and assist war-affected regions like Gaza. During this meeting, Sharif praised Trump, referring to him as a "man of peace" and a "savior of South Asia." Trump reciprocated by complimenting both Sharif and Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir.
