Oyarzabal's Stellar Performance Sparks Praise from Spain's Coach
De la Fuente: Oyarzabal Can Build an 'Exceptional Legacy'
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain, commended Mikel Oyarzabal for his pivotal contribution to Spain's victory over Saudi Arabia in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. He expressed that Oyarzabal has the potential to create an 'exceptional legacy' in Spanish football.
In addition to the opening goal scored by the talented Lamine Yamal, Oyarzabal's two goals were crucial in Spain's 4-0 triumph against Saudi Arabia during their second group stage match, following a goalless draw with Cape Verde.
Oyarzabal's performance was remarkable, as he netted two goals and provided an assist within the first 24 minutes of the game, standing out among a lineup that included stars like Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, and Rodri. De la Fuente noted, "I do not know anyone who underestimates him. Anyone who understands football values him enormously. For some, his impact may seem minor, but we recognize its significance. The other day, he went nearly 30 minutes without touching the ball, and today, he became the first player to score two goals and assist in just 24 minutes. We must appreciate Mikel. He can build an exceptional legacy in Spanish football."
Praise for Olmo, Baena, and Merino
Dani Olmo also shone in the match, completing 34 successful passes with a 92% accuracy rate. De la Fuente praised him as "one of the best players in the world at operating between the lines," highlighting his effectiveness in crucial situations.
Alex Baena from Atletico Madrid and Mikel Merino from Arsenal were also recognized for their contributions. De la Fuente remarked on Baena's ability to provide width and play through the middle, stating, "He has tremendous quality and a fantastic shot. He is different, but at the same time perfectly suited to our way of playing." He referred to Merino as a "rock," noting that he played in the second half despite not being at his peak physically. "He told me he was ready. If the game had unfolded differently, we probably would have needed him even more," de la Fuente added.
Baena on Team's Collective Strength
Following the victory over Saudi Arabia, which alleviated some pressure on the team, Baena emphasized the importance of every player in the squad, stating that each member could start for any national team worldwide. "Maybe we don't receive the same worldwide attention, but any player in the Spain squad would start for any other national team in the world," he remarked.
"We know how good we are, and the coaching staff knows it too, and that's what matters most," Baena continued. He played a vital role in the first two goals scored by Yamal and Oyarzabal, expressing gratitude for being able to assist the team. "I think I played well, but the most important thing is that the team won and can keep moving forward."
Spain's final group stage match is scheduled against Uruguay on June 26 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
