Owaisi's Remarks on Babri Masjid Demolition
Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), expressed on Saturday that the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, significantly undermined the Indian Constitution, marking it as a grim day for the nation. He criticized attempts to downplay the repercussions of this event, asserting that it violated the rule of law and left deep scars on the country.
While addressing an event in Hyderabad, Owaisi remarked, "Today is December 6. We all know what transpired on this day in 1992... The Babri Masjid was demolished in the presence of police... The Supreme Court stated that the demolition of the Babri Masjid was a breach of the rule of law... The Prime Minister recently mentioned that wounds from 500 years are being healed. However, the Supreme Court clarified that no temple was destroyed to construct the mosque. On what basis is the Prime Minister making such claims? The real wounds are that on December 6, 1992, it was not just a mosque that fell, but the Indian Constitution was weakened... December 6 is indeed a dark day.
On that fateful day in 1992, a large group of 'karsevaks' demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Following this, numerous Muslim homes in Ayodhya faced vandalism, arson, and destruction. Riots erupted across various parts of the country, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities. Meanwhile, today, suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a mosque in Murshidabad.
Kabir highlighted the constitutional right to build religious sites, asserting that he is not engaging in any unconstitutional activities. He stated, "Just as anyone can construct a temple or a church, I too can build a mosque." Addressing the gathering, he added, "I am not doing anything unconstitutional. Anyone can build a temple, anyone can build a church; I will build a mosque. It is said that we cannot construct the Babri Masjid. There is no written law against it. The Supreme Court ruled that Hindus demolished the Babri Masjid. Considering the sentiments of Hindus, a decision was made to build a temple here. Now we see someone laying the foundation stone for a Ram temple in Sagar Digha. But the Constitution permits us to build a mosque."
