Over 1 Million Voter Names Set for Deletion in Assam's Electoral Roll Revision
Significant Voter Roll Changes in Assam
The Election Commission announced on Saturday that over 1 million voter names in Assam are slated for removal following a comprehensive house-to-house verification as part of the electoral roll revision process.
Out of the total, approximately 479,000 names will be deleted due to confirmed deaths, while more than 523,000 voters have been identified as having relocated from their registered addresses.
With elections approaching next year, Assam is undergoing a unique revision process. Unlike 12 other states and Union Territories, the Election Commission is not implementing a special intensive revision in Assam. Instead, on November 17, it instructed the state's chief electoral officer to carry out a 'special revision' of the electoral rolls, designating January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for this exercise.
This directive followed a recent announcement by the Chief Election Commissioner on October 27, regarding a special intensive revision in various states including West Bengal, Kerala, and Rajasthan, among others.
At that time, it was indicated that a separate order for Assam would be forthcoming due to the unique provisions of the Citizenship Act applicable to the state.
Assembly elections are also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, and Puducherry during the first half of 2026.
The door-to-door verification in Assam was conducted from November 22 to December 20, without involving document checks, unlike the special intensive revision process.
As of Saturday, the Election Commission reported that Assam has a total of 25,202,775 registered voters.
Among these, there are 25,109,754 voters classified as 'D' voters, whose citizenship status is under review by Foreigners’ Tribunals, preventing them from voting until their status is confirmed by a court.
Additionally, the commission identified 53,619 duplicate entries, with booth-level officers visiting over 6.1 million households for voter verification.
Following the publication of the draft rolls, the window for filing claims and objections has opened and will remain open until January 22, with the final list set to be released on February 10.
In November, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed support for the special revision initiative, stating, 'This will help ensure clean, updated, and accurate electoral rolls for all eligible citizens.' He assured that Assam would fully cooperate with the Election Commission to ensure a transparent and timely revision process.
Meanwhile, approximately 3.6 crore voters across 11 states and Union Territories have had their names deleted as part of the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
The draft electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh is expected to be published on December 31, with final electoral rolls for all participating states and Union Territories scheduled for publication on February 14.
In Bihar, where the revision was completed ahead of the Assembly elections in November, around 4.7 million voters were excluded from the final electoral roll released on September 30.
Concerns were raised in Bihar regarding the potential removal of eligible voters from the rolls, leading several petitioners to approach the Supreme Court.
