Over 1 Million Europeans Demand Suspension of EU-Israel Trade Agreement

In a significant development, over one million Europeans have signed a petition urging the EU to suspend its trade agreement with Israel, citing severe human rights violations in Gaza. This movement, initiated by the European Left Alliance and various civil organizations, has reached the required signature threshold, compelling the European Commission to respond. The petition highlights Israel's actions in Gaza, including civilian casualties and humanitarian aid blockades, as reasons for the demand. As the situation escalates, the call for accountability and a reevaluation of EU-Israel relations grows louder, with organizers aiming for 1.5 million signatures before the campaign concludes.

Growing Call for Trade Deal Suspension

Recent reports indicate that despite the European Union being Israel's largest trading partner, over one million Europeans are advocating for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. According to Euro News, trade between the two entities reached €42.6 billion in 2024. However, the petitioners cite Israel's 'unprecedented level of killing and injury of civilians' in Gaza as the primary reason for their demand. The European Citizens' Initiative has successfully gathered the required one million signatures, compelling the European Commission and Parliament to address the issue.

The EU-Israel Association Agreement, established in 2000, has faced scrutiny as the petition, which has garnered support from all 27 EU member states, calls for its full suspension due to alleged human rights violations by Israel. The petition states, 'Demand the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in view of Israel’s violations of human rights.'

The petition accuses Israel of causing significant civilian casualties, widespread displacement, and the destruction of medical facilities in Gaza. It also claims that Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid could lead to starvation, constituting a method of warfare. Furthermore, it alleges multiple violations of international law and failure to prevent genocide as mandated by the International Court of Justice.

Critics of the EU-Israel agreement argue that it undermines the EU's commitment to human rights, stating, 'EU citizens cannot tolerate that the EU maintains an agreement that contributes to legitimize and finance a State that commits crimes against humanity and war crimes.' The petition calls for the Commission to propose a full suspension of the agreement.

The European Citizens' Initiative serves as a participatory democracy tool, allowing EU citizens to propose new laws. If a proposal garners one million signatures from at least seven member states within a year, the European Commission is obligated to respond.

This latest push for the suspension of the EU-Israel trade deal follows ongoing Israeli military actions in northern Gaza, which escalated after Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. The demand was initiated by the European Left Alliance, alongside various civil society organizations and pro-Palestinian movements, with a goal of reaching 1.5 million signatures before the campaign concludes. Authorities will have three months to verify the signatures before formal submission, and the European Commission will need to clarify its response, while the European Parliament will conduct a hearing with the petition organizers.
