Filmmaker's Oscar Disappears at JFK Airport

Los Angeles: Pasha Talankin, a Russian filmmaker and co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin, has reported the loss of his Oscar statuette after security personnel at New York's JFK Airport prohibited him from taking it on board a flight.

Talankin, who also starred in the documentary that secured the Best Feature Documentary award this year, encountered issues at a security checkpoint on Wednesday when an official stopped him from carrying the statuette, which weighs around 3.8 kg.

He mentioned that he had previously traveled with the Oscar over a dozen times since winning it in March without any problems.

Talankin expressed his confusion, stating, "It’s completely baffling how they consider an Oscar a weapon... I flew with it in the cabin, and there never was any kind of problem," during a conversation from Frankfurt, Germany, where he arrived on a Lufthansa flight the following morning.

A Lufthansa representative at the checkpoint offered to accompany Talankin to the gate and keep the statuette safe during the flight, but this was denied by the security official.

Additionally, a suggestion to store the Oscar in the cockpit was also rejected by airport security and a Lufthansa supervisor.

To assist with communication, Talankin reached out to the film's executive producer, Robin Hessman, who speaks Russian, to help translate during his discussions with airport and airline staff.

With no alternatives left, Talankin was instructed to check the award as cargo.

After checking in his luggage, airline officials provided him with a cardboard box. Two agents then wrapped the Oscar in bubble wrap and took it for transport, a process that Talankin documented on his phone.

However, upon arriving in Frankfurt, he discovered that the box was missing.

Hessman recounted, "He calls me this morning from Frankfurt saying Lufthansa doesn’t have it. They lost it," adding that despite having a receipt for the box, the airline was unable to locate it.

In a statement to a media outlet, Lufthansa expressed regret over the incident, stating, "We deeply regret this situation. Our team is treating this matter with the utmost care and urgency, and we are conducting a comprehensive internal search to ensure the Oscar is found and returned as quickly as possible."

As per reports, Oscar winners can request a replacement statuette from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in rare cases where an award is lost or significantly damaged.

Talankin, who previously worked as a grade school teacher in an industrial town in Russia, has been living in exile after opposing a Kremlin directive to enforce a nationalistic and militaristic curriculum in Russian schools following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Mr. Nobody Against Putin, directed by David Borenstein and co-directed by Talankin, chronicles his transformation from a cherished educator to a social outcast.
