Protest Against Chief Election Commissioner Intensifies

In New Delhi, members of the INDIA bloc are gearing up for a significant protest on Thursday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This decision comes after opposition leaders faced obstacles while trying to reach Jantar Mantar during a coordinated effort involving various party MPs.

During discussions on Wednesday, party leaders agreed to escalate their protest, with plans for increased participation from MPs.

Following a luncheon meeting led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the opposition parties organized transportation for their members. Three air-conditioned buses were arranged to facilitate the MPs' movement, ensuring representation from the diverse constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

After the meeting, the MPs collectively headed to the buses stationed on Janpath, setting off towards Jantar Mantar.

However, their journey was halted at Ashoka Road, near the Shangri-La hotel, approximately two kilometers from their destination. Although the MPs could have remained on the buses if no provocations occurred, the sight of protesters prompted leaders to disembark and continue with their demonstration, according to sources.

Several opposition figures were detained after initiating a sit-in and chanting slogans demanding Kumar's resignation.

The INDIA bloc also deliberated on their attempts to arrange a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. A request for a meeting with a delegation of 15 leaders was made, while permission was granted for 10 members to meet the president, as per sources. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee is anticipated to be part of this delegation.

This mobilization occurred just a day after INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament to the Election Commission (EC) headquarters, where they conducted an eight-hour sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan after being obstructed by police.

Notable leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained at the conclusion of the protest.

The opposition has been calling for Kumar's resignation, citing allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.

These protests were sparked by a report published on September 25 in The Indian Express, which highlighted alleged irregularities in the SIR process and disagreements among election commissioners regarding specific decisions.
