Opposition Leaders to Stage Major Protest Against Election Commission in Delhi

On October 7, leaders from the INDIA bloc will gather in Delhi for a major protest against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The demonstration, set to take place outside the Election Commission's office at 1 PM, will see participation from various opposition parties, including Congress and AAP. The protest aims to address concerns over the transparency of the voter list revision process and calls for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. With heightened security measures in place, the event is expected to draw significant attention and could lead to further protests in other states.

Protest Planned by INDIA Bloc Leaders

New Delhi: On Wednesday, October 7, leaders from the INDIA bloc are set to hold a significant protest amidst ongoing disputes with the Election Commission regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The opposition parties plan to gather outside the Election Commission's office around 1 PM. Participants will include Congress, CPI, CPI(M), RJD, NCP, RSP, and others. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also announced its participation in this demonstration.

Opposition's Stand Against SIR

The primary focus of this protest is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Opposition parties are questioning the SIR process and demanding its withdrawal, asserting that any changes to the voter list should be transparent and should not infringe upon voters' rights.

Leaders from the INDIA bloc emphasize that the voter list is a crucial element of the democratic process. Therefore, clarity and transparency regarding the revision of the voter list are essential for both political parties and voters. The opposition is preparing to present its objections to the Election Commission on this matter.

Demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar's Resignation

During the protest, opposition parties will also call for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Leaders from the INDIA bloc are questioning the Election Commission's role concerning the SIR and are seeking answers from the commission.

However, these are the political demands and accusations from the opposition parties. The Election Commission has previously stated its position on this issue on various occasions, indicating that it had not received any requests for meetings from opposition leaders following the established protocols.

AAP's Participation in the Protest

The involvement of the Aam Aadmi Party in Wednesday's protest is considered particularly significant. AAP leaders, including Saurabh Bhardwaj, will participate, linking this protest to the alleged issue of 'vote theft'.

Notably, AAP did not participate in the INDIA bloc's protest march on October 6, where several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, marched towards the Election Commission's office. The police had barricaded the area about 400 meters from the office, halting the march.

Increased Security in Delhi

In anticipation of today's protest, security measures in Delhi have been heightened. Additional security forces have been deployed around the Election Commission's office and Parliament Street. Barricades have also been set up at Jantar Mantar. Following the previous day's protest, security in these areas has been intensified.

Authorities are striving to maintain law and order during the protest and ensure that movement in critical areas is not disrupted. Security agencies and police are closely monitoring the situation in light of the upcoming demonstration.

Part of Opposition's Unified Strategy

This protest by the INDIA bloc is seen as part of a unified strategy among opposition parties. Congress and several other parties have been consistently voicing their opposition regarding the SIR issue. They assert that they will continue to raise this matter before the Election Commission and demand transparency in the voter list process.

The opposition has indicated plans to organize protests regarding the SIR in other states following Delhi. Thus, Wednesday's demonstration may not be confined to just the capital.

All Eyes on the Protest

Currently, all attention is focused on the protest scheduled for 1 PM. The inclusion of AAP leaders is expected to bolster the opposition's presence. Security has been heightened around the Election Commission's office, and the administration remains vigilant regarding the protest.

The main issues of the protest will revolve around SIR, changes to the voter list, and the demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. It remains to be seen how this political confrontation between the opposition and the Election Commission unfolds during the protest.
