Opposition Grows Against Relocation of Dibrugarh Polytechnic

The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) has expressed strong opposition to the proposed relocation of Dibrugarh Polytechnic, warning of significant protests if the decision is not rescinded. Lakhindar Kurmi, a leader within ATTSA, criticized the move as arbitrary and detrimental to students, emphasizing the institution's historical significance since its establishment in 1965. He highlighted the Polytechnic's role in providing technical education to thousands of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, urging the government to reconsider its decision for the benefit of the community. While supporting the establishment of a new Polytechnic in Tingkhong, Kurmi insists that the historic institution must remain in its current location.

Dibrugarh, Sept 11: The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) has voiced strong opposition to the reported plan to shift the historic Dibrugarh Polytechnic to the nearby Lahowal area, threatening significant protests if the decision is not reversed.

In a statement, Lakhindar Kurmi, the central assistant general secretary of ATTSA, criticized the proposed move as “arbitrary” and detrimental to students, urging the government to rethink its decision for the benefit of students and the local community.

Established in 1965, Kurmi emphasized that the Polytechnic is more than just a government facility; it plays a crucial role in technical education and has greatly contributed to the educational and socio-economic progress of Dibrugarh and Lahowal.

He noted that over the years, thousands of students, especially from economically disadvantaged and middle-class farming and working families, have benefited from the technical education offered at this institution, leading them to become self-sufficient.

“An institution with such a rich history cannot be relocated without justification. ATTSA will not tolerate any attempts to diminish the significance of this institution at its current site,” Kurmi stated.

He further criticized the government and the Education Department, claiming that instead of enhancing and modernizing the region's educational facilities, the authorities are making decisions that could undermine an institution that has educated generations.

“While we support the establishment of a new Polytechnic in Tingkhong, it is essential that the historic institution at Lahowal remains at its current location,” he added.
