Opposition Disrupts Rajya Sabha Proceedings Over Police Actions and Student Protests

Rajya Sabha Session Interrupted by Opposition Protests

New Delhi, July 29 – The Rajya Sabha session was suspended for approximately 40 minutes until noon on Wednesday due to disruptions caused by opposition members. These MPs were protesting against the Delhi police's entry into the office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Delhi and the attempted arrest of former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh. They also reiterated their demand for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding police actions against students who protested against the NEET question paper leak in the national capital.

Concerns Raised Over Police Actions

As soon as the listed documents were presented in the house, CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the issue of Aishe Ghosh. He stated that a plainclothes team from the Delhi police entered the party office to arrest Ghosh in connection with a case related to protests at JNU in 2021. Brittas linked the police action to recent student protests, asserting that Ghosh's only fault was participating in a demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

Opposition Leaders Voice Alarm

Supporting Brittas, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge expressed that democracy is under threat. The Congress president questioned who authorized the police's entry into a national political party's office. In response to these allegations, House Leader JP Nadda stated that this was a matter of general law and order. He emphasized that police must act according to the law and that their actions were in line with legal protocols.

Minister Reflects on Student Activism

Nadda further remarked that any student involved in active politics or movements could face such actions. He shared his own experiences, recalling that he too faced similar actions during his student activism, including being arrested from his classroom during the Emergency, an incident he mentioned occurred twice.

Zero Hour and Continued Disruptions

The Chairperson initiated Zero Hour, allowing members to raise their issues. Meanwhile, opposition members continued to demand a statement from the Home Minister regarding police actions against students who protested against the NEET question paper leak last week in the national capital. Members from the ruling party opposed this demand. The opposition began chanting slogans for Shah's statement, prompting Chairperson C.P. Radhakrishnan to attempt to conduct Zero Hour. However, due to ongoing disruptions, he suspended the session until noon at around 11:20 AM, warning protesting members not to approach the Chair.

Since the commencement of the monsoon session on July 20, the Rajya Sabha has experienced continuous disruptions.
