Lok Sabha Session Disrupted by Opposition Protests

On Monday, the Lok Sabha was unable to initiate discussions on a bill aimed at preventing paper leaks, due to uproar from opposition members regarding police actions against students who protested last week in Delhi over the NEET paper leak issue. The session was suspended multiple times throughout the day as Congress and other opposition parties demanded a response from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police's treatment of the students.

Similarly, the Rajya Sabha also faced disruptions, leading to its adjournment until 11 AM the following day after being suspended four times. Sources indicated that there is a consensus between the ruling and opposition parties on the bill containing stringent provisions against examination paper leaks, with discussions expected to commence the next day.

Government's Response to Opposition's Disruption

Amidst the chaos, the government introduced an amendment bill aimed at addressing paper leaks in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh, presented the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, despite the uproar from opposition members. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla acknowledged several opposition members, including TMC's Sougata Roy and Congress's Manish Tewari, asking if they wished to speak on the bill, but no one responded.

Birla emphasized the importance of the bill, stating that it warrants extensive discussion in the house and among the public, as various parties have long sought dialogue on this issue. He expressed hope that members would share their views on how to effectively prevent paper leaks through this legislation.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju remarked that there was an expectation for the opposition to engage in discussions, especially since they have been vocal about the NEET paper leak and its implications for students' futures. He noted that despite appeals to the Congress party for cooperation, they remained unyielding, questioning their refusal to participate in the legislative process while claiming they were being silenced in Parliament.
