Protests Continue in Delhi-NCR

In Delhi-NCR, the protests led by commercial vehicle operators and taxi unions entered their second day on Friday. These demonstrations are in response to the rising costs of fuel and CNG, coupled with demands for fare adjustments. Various transport organizations, including the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and the Driver Power Union, have announced a 72-hour strike. These groups represent truck operators, private bus owners, cab drivers, and maxi-cab drivers in the region.

Minimal Disruption Observed

Despite the protests, most areas in the capital experienced only minor disruptions in daily commutes, particularly at the New Delhi railway station. Auto-rickshaws and taxis were operating normally on Friday, resulting in minimal impact on services. Drivers from various taxi services noted that there has been no fare revision in nearly a decade, even as fuel and vehicle maintenance costs have surged. They expressed that the rising prices of CNG and petrol, along with increasing household expenses, have placed significant financial strain on them.

Drivers Demand Fare Increase

The drivers are calling for the removal of additional charges on CNG and fuel, as well as an increase in taxi fares. They warned that the current economic hardships could severely affect the earnings and livelihoods of thousands of drivers across Delhi. Previously, AIMTC had cautioned that if the Delhi government fails to address their demands and make immediate fare adjustments, the protests could escalate into a larger movement.

Formal Meeting Requested

In addition to fare adjustments, the driver unions have requested a formal meeting with the government to discuss policy measures aimed at protecting the interests of commercial vehicle operators and regulating app-based transport services. This strike coincides with a recent hike in fuel prices nationwide. In Delhi, petrol prices have risen by 87 paise to ₹98.64 per liter, while diesel prices increased by 91 paise to ₹91.58 per liter. This has further intensified the pressure on commercial drivers already grappling with rising operational costs.
