Significant Gas Discovery by ONGC

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced a significant gas discovery in a deepwater well located off the eastern coast of India. This find, situated near Odisha, could facilitate quicker development if further assessments confirm its commercial potential.

The discovery was made on September 18 at the MN-DW18-1-H-D well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, approximately 43 kilometers from Konark, as part of ONGC's Samudra Manthan deepwater exploration initiative.

This well marks ONGC's inaugural drilling in the Mahanadi Basin under this campaign, where gas was encountered at depths ranging from 1,441 to 1,452 meters after reaching a target depth of 1,623 meters. The well has been producing gas for three consecutive days, demonstrating promising flow and reservoir pressure, according to ONGC's statement on Monday.

The company noted that this discovery is pending further appraisal and commercial assessment. Its close proximity to the Odisha coastline could enable early monetization if deemed commercially viable. Additionally, this find, along with others in the vicinity, may be developed using shared facilities, as stated by ONGC.

Development could be facilitated under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, 2025, which allow for the production of deepwater resources through shared infrastructure. This discovery aligns with ONGC's strategy to enhance exploration efforts in India's deepwater basins, aiming to boost domestic hydrocarbon production and lessen dependence on imports.

The drilling of the well commenced on July 25 using the drillship Platinum Explorer. This discovery comes at a time when ONGC is intensifying its focus on unexplored offshore areas, where successful deepwater discoveries often necessitate substantial investment in appraisal and infrastructure before commercial production can commence.

Moving forward, the next steps for the Mahanadi Basin discovery will involve further reservoir appraisal, evaluation of recoverable resources, and a commercial assessment prior to any development decisions.
