Omar Abdullah Urges Community Unity After Terror Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir
Call for Unity in the Face of Terrorism
On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the need for viewing the community through a broader lens following recent terrorist attacks. Speaking at the Hindustan Leadership Summit 2025 in New Delhi, he expressed that the Kashmiri people are equally distressed by the violence in Delhi as they were by the attacks in Pahalgam. Abdullah clarified that not all Kashmiri Muslims are terrorists, highlighting that only a small minority supports such actions. He described 2025 as a particularly challenging year for Jammu and Kashmir, referencing the attack in Basran (Pahalgam) and the explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi, which he attributed to a conspiracy originating from Jammu and Kashmir.
Community Response to Violence
He further noted that many individuals seen protesting with candles after the Basran attack were ordinary citizens. This tragic incident claimed the lives of over two dozen people at a popular tourist destination. Abdullah pointed out that these individuals are students in colleges and universities, striving to earn a living honestly. He lamented that the April attack in Pahalgam severely impacted the economy of the Union Territory, which was already fragile. He stated that unfortunate circumstances like these exacerbate the economic challenges faced by the region.
Addressing Broader Issues
Abdullah also discussed the issue of integration within India, citing an example from Haryana. He mentioned that following the explosion in Delhi, a government directive was issued requiring all foreign nationals and Kashmiris to register at their nearest police stations. He expressed concern that by the time they could communicate with local leaders, significant damage had already occurred.
