Olympians to Lead Cycling Events in Visakhapatnam and Delhi
The 63rd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle will feature prominent Olympians Jinson Johnson and Anish Bhanwala as key attractions on March 1. Jinson Johnson, who represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics and holds the national record in the 1500m with a time of 3:35.24, will join the cycling initiative at the picturesque RK Beach in Visakhapatnam. He is celebrated for his achievements, including a gold medal in the 1500m and a silver in the 800m at the 2018 Asian Games, along with a silver in the 1500m at the 2022 Asian Games, establishing him as India's leading middle-distance runner.
In New Delhi, Anish Bhanwala, an Olympian and gold medallist in the 25m rapid fire pistol event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will participate alongside accomplished fencer Taniksha Khatri. This event will take place at the renowned Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Swimming Pool Complex, in collaboration with the Fire and Emergency Departments of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Bhanwala has also earned silver medals at the ISSF World Championships in Cairo (Mixed Team - 2022; Individual - 2025) and a bronze at the 2022 Asian Games (Team, Hangzhou). Taniksha Khatri made history as a quarterfinalist at the 2022 Asian Games, achieving the best performance by an Indian fencer in the Épée event. They will be joined by Fit India ambassador Nancy and popular Zumba instructor Akanksha Tagotra.
A Nationwide Fitness Movement
Initiated in December 2024 by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, Fit India Sundays on Cycle has transformed into a significant public movement, engaging over 2.5 million participants across more than 250,000 locations nationwide. This initiative is part of the broader Fit India Movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 29, 2019, aiming to integrate fitness into daily routines and promote a shift towards active living.
Event Organisation and Partners
The Fit India Sundays on Cycle event is organized weekly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, and the Sports Authority of India, in partnership with various organizations including the Cycling Federation of India, Mallakhamb Association, Kudo Association, NaMo Cycling Clubs, Indian Rope Skipping Federation, My Bharat, and Yogasana Bharat. This cycling initiative is conducted simultaneously across all States and Union Territories, including SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs), and Khelo India Centres (KICs).
More Than Just a Cycling Rally
In addition to cycling, the event will feature various activities such as yoga sessions led by Yogasana Bharat, rope skipping demonstrations, Kudo martial arts showcases, and cultural performances, transforming the morning into a holistic fitness festival rather than merely a cycling event.
Campaign Themes and Goals
With its dual themes of #FightObesity and #PollutionKaSolution, Fit India Sundays on Cycle aims to motivate citizens to embrace cycling as a sustainable, accessible, and community-oriented form of physical activity.
