Odisha's Student Union Elections: A Long-Awaited Return to Campus Democracy

The nomination phase for student union elections in Odisha has officially started, signaling the return of campus democracy after an eight-year hiatus. Candidates can submit their nominations and engage in campaigning leading up to the elections scheduled for October 15. With direct elections in numerous colleges and universities, the excitement is palpable as students prepare to vote. A special meeting will allow candidates to present their views, and results will be announced shortly after the polls. This marks a significant moment for student representation in Odisha.
 

Nomination Process Kicks Off for Student Elections


Bhubaneswar: The process for nominating candidates for student union elections commenced on Friday across various colleges and universities in Odisha, heralding the approach of campus elections set for October 15 after an eight-year break.


Candidates are allowed to submit their nomination forms between 10 AM and 1 PM, with the scrutiny of these nominations taking place from 2 PM to 4 PM. The list of accepted nominations will be released by 5 PM.


On Saturday, candidates have the option to withdraw their nominations from 10 AM to 1 PM, with the final list of candidates being published at 3 PM.


Direct elections are planned for 13 universities and 328 colleges, while 205 institutions will select their student representatives through a different selection method.


As the campaign intensifies, student organizations are actively engaging with voters to bolster their support ahead of the elections, which have garnered significant attention due to their return after a lengthy absence.


A meeting titled ‘Why I Stand For’ is set for October 14, allowing candidates to share their perspectives and motivations for running.


Voting will occur on October 15 from 8 AM to 2 PM, with the counting of votes starting at 2 PM. The results will be announced following the counting process, and the newly elected representatives will take their oaths the next day.


It is noteworthy that the last student union elections in Odisha took place in 2017.
