Odisha's Governor Advocates for Integrated Skill Development and Education
Strengthening Workforce Competitiveness
Bhubaneswar: On Friday, Odisha's Governor, Hari Babu Kambhampati, emphasized the importance of aligning skill development with education to cultivate a workforce that can compete on a global scale.
During the inauguration of the National Skill Development Corporation's (NSDC) international center at the Skill Development Institute (SDI) in Bhubaneswar, he highlighted the necessity for enhanced partnerships between educational institutions and skill training centers.
Citing the National Education Policy 2020, Kambhampati pointed out the need to merge skill training with higher education.
"In our interconnected world, acquiring skills is vital for boosting productivity, fostering economic growth, and empowering communities," he remarked.
He also noted that skill development initiatives should encompass entrepreneurship support.
According to him, educational institutions should not only focus on technical skills but also provide guidance on business startups, securing funding, and identifying opportunities.
Kambhampati stressed the significance of introducing vocational education early, stating that "children absorb knowledge more quickly than adults and should have vocational training integrated into their curriculum."
He praised the Skill India Mission, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, and acknowledged Odisha's contributions under Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's leadership.
"I am pleased to see Odisha evolving into a center for skill development and employment," he remarked.
The Governor commended the SDI's modern 47-acre campus, which was developed with an investment of Rs 500 crore, recognizing its role as a finishing school for engineering, polytechnic, and ITI students.
During the event, he inaugurated the NSDC International Academy, aimed at preparing youth for jobs abroad, and launched the 'Skill on Wheel' project—a mobile training unit designed to provide outreach training programs directly to various educational institutions throughout Odisha.
Sampad Chandra Swain, Odisha's Minister of State for Industries, Skill Development, and Technical Education, stated that the institute will not only provide technical skills but also play a crucial role in developing responsible and capable individuals.
