Odisha's Ambitious EV Policy 2.0: Aiming for 50% Electric Vehicle Registrations by 2036

Odisha's New Electric Vehicle Initiative

Bhubaneswar: The government of Odisha has unveiled its plans for EV Policy 2.0, which aims to ensure that at least half of all new vehicle registrations consist of battery-operated electric vehicles (BEVs) by the year 2036.

The state is currently revising its existing Odisha EV Policy from 2021, extending its validity and enhancing incentives for both electric vehicle purchasers and Charge Point Operators (CPOs), as stated in an official announcement made on Wednesday.

This policy framework was the focus of a meeting attended by Usha Padhee, the principal secretary for Commerce & Transport, alongside Vishal Kumar Dev, the principal secretary for Energy.

High-ranking officials from both departments engaged in extensive discussions to facilitate Odisha's transition towards electric mobility and to meet significant targets.

The registration of electric vehicles in the state has seen a notable increase, rising from 1.16% in 2021 to 8.71% as of June 20, 2025, according to the statement.

The goal is to achieve a minimum of 50% BEVs in all new vehicle registrations by 2036.

Currently, Odisha boasts over 550 Public Charging Stations (PCS), which include infrastructure operated by two-wheeler manufacturers, power distribution firms, and oil marketing companies.

The State Transport Authority (STA) has already issued a request for proposals to establish EV charging stations at key locations throughout the state.

A comprehensive strategy is being implemented to enhance both the supply side (manufacturing ecosystem) and the demand side (consumer incentives) to promote balanced and inclusive growth in the electric vehicle sector.
