Significant Pension Increase Announced

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha state government has announced an increase in the monthly pension to ₹3,500 for individuals aged 80 and above, as well as for those with disabilities exceeding 80%. This change is set to take effect from June, according to an official statement.

The notification from the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department confirms that this enhanced pension falls under the state's social welfare initiatives.

Beneficiaries of both the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and the Madhu Babu Pension Scheme (MBPS) will now receive the new pension amount, which is a significant rise from the previous ₹1,500 per month.

On Tuesday, the SSEPD Department instructed all District Social Security Officers (DSSOs) to implement this pension increase starting in June, utilizing the list of eligible recipients provided by sub-collectors.

DSSOs are also tasked with approving the revised pension amounts and sending the necessary documentation to the department for further processing. Notably, this increase will be applied retroactively from January 2025.

This pension enhancement was part of the BJP's election manifesto and was first announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during his inaugural budget presentation in July 2024, which allocated ₹7,600 crore for pension schemes.

In January of this year, Majhi had already distributed the increased pension to a select group at a state-level event in Keonjhar district.
