Investigation Progress in Gopalpur Beach Incident
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Crime Branch is actively pursuing the investigation into the alleged gangrape of a college student at Gopalpur beach, having gathered significant digital evidence against ten suspects, as reported by a senior official on Monday.
Evidence collected includes CCTV footage and mobile communications, which have been forwarded to the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL). Following the analysis, a charge sheet will be prepared, the officer stated.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 15, involved the assault of a 20-year-old college student and her male companion by ten individuals, four of whom are minors.
All suspects have been apprehended, with the case subsequently transferred to the CID Crime Branch. Currently, the adult suspects are in judicial custody, while the minors are placed in juvenile facilities.
Vinaytosh Mishra, the Director General of the Crime Branch, informed the media that mobile devices belonging to all ten suspects and relevant CCTV footage have been secured.
DNA profiling of the accused has already been completed, he added.
"We are gathering both direct and circumstantial evidence. Digital evidence is increasingly vital for securing convictions," Mishra noted.
The digital evidence has been submitted to the SFL, and the charge sheet will follow once the report is received.
If necessary, the police may request the remand of the accused for further questioning.
Regarding the survivor, Mishra stated, "We are offering psychological support to the victim, and she will receive compensation in accordance with established guidelines."
Earlier today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Odisha chief secretary and the Director General of Police, demanding a comprehensive report on the case within two weeks.
Additionally, the National Commission for Women has urged the Odisha DGP to ensure a prompt and thorough investigation, provide free medical and psychological assistance to the victim, and facilitate her compensation.
