Chief Minister's Stance on Crime and Women's Safety

The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, asserted on Thursday that the state's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has not provided political protection to any criminals during its 18-month tenure.

Majhi expressed his concern regarding the increasing incidents of crime against women. He made these remarks while responding to discussions on the home department's budget demands in the assembly.

He stated, “Several members of the house have raised concerns about violence against women, and I share their sentiments. The rise in violence against women is indeed alarming. Personally, I wish for no incidents of this nature to occur. However, despite our best efforts, unfortunate events continue to happen. Nevertheless, the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards such cases.”

The opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, criticized the state government, citing incidents such as gang rape in Ganjam district's Gopalpur, a case in Baliharachandi of Puri district, a student's self-immolation due to sexual harassment in Balasore, and the self-immolation of a minor girl in Balanga, Puri district.

In response, the Chief Minister challenged those criticizing the government on women's safety, asking them to name just one case where an accused was deliberately not arrested or given political protection.

Majhi further claimed that he could provide numerous examples where the previous government had shielded offenders. He emphasized, “No criminal involved in violence against women will be spared.”
