Odisha Chief Minister Announces ₹110 Crore Relief Package for Flood Victims

In response to the devastating floods in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi has announced a ₹110 crore relief package for affected residents. Relief Measures for Flood-Affected Residents

Bhubaneswar, August 3 - The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Chandra Majhi, declared a preliminary relief package of ₹110 crore for those affected by the recent floods on Monday. Additionally, the state government has initiated a survey to assess the damage caused by this disaster. Reports indicate that at least six lives have been lost, and 3,567 homes have been damaged.

Majhi instructed officials to expedite rehabilitation and restoration efforts, ensuring that compensation reaches eligible families without delay based on the initial assessments. He mentioned that a comprehensive aid announcement would follow the final survey of the damages caused by the ongoing floods. An official noted that, in line with the Chief Minister's directive, all eligible beneficiaries and families in the flood-affected areas would receive free relief, which will continue until normalcy is restored.

Previously, the state's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari, shared that joint teams from the revenue and agriculture departments are surveying areas where floodwaters have receded. The survey aims to evaluate damage to homes, loss of life, livestock, and crops. The minister stated that relief packages would be provided to affected families according to the standards set by the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Interim compensation will also be made available based on initial reports. Families with completely damaged homes will receive assistance of up to ₹1.2 lakh. For partially damaged permanent houses, ₹6,500 will be provided, while ₹4,000 will be allocated for damaged mud houses, and ₹8,000 for completely destroyed huts.

Support of ₹3,000 will be given for damages to animal shelters. Pujari also announced compensation for agricultural losses, stating that farmers would receive ₹8,500 per hectare for rain-fed land, ₹17,000 per hectare for irrigated land, and ₹22,500 per hectare for perennial crops. He noted that the floods have impacted 863,909 individuals across 1,458 villages in 85 blocks of 22 districts in the state.

While the minister did not disclose the exact number of fatalities, he mentioned that families of those who lost their lives in the floods would receive a compensation of ₹4 lakh according to SDRF standards. Furthermore, he stated that the mother of a firefighter who died during relief operations would receive ₹1.05 crore, which includes insurance and other benefits typically granted to government employees who die in the line of duty.
