NPP's Expansion Plans in Assam

Shillong, March 25: The National People's Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, is actively working to broaden its influence in Assam. The party has pinpointed specific constituencies where it has established long-term relationships with local leaders.

"Our ambition has always been to extend our reach across the Northeast. Although we had not previously made significant inroads in Assam, we have identified certain areas where we have maintained connections with local leaders for an extended period," Sangma stated during a press briefing on Wednesday.

He explained that the decision to nominate candidates in Assam stems from these ongoing interactions and should be viewed as part of a comprehensive political strategy for the future.

Sangma highlighted that the NPP's entry into Assam is not merely about short-term electoral success but signifies a long-term commitment to enhancing its presence in the region.

"We should not evaluate our political journey solely through the lens of elections. For us, this is a process and a pledge we are making. We are initiating our commitment to Assam and will persist in our efforts," he remarked.

Expressing confidence in the party's potential, Sangma mentioned that the NPP is optimistic about achieving a significant electoral milestone in Assam.

"We are hopeful that we will secure our first win in this election in Assam," he added.

The NPP, which has a strong foothold in Meghalaya, is keen on expanding its influence in other Northeastern states as part of its growth strategy, according to party officials.

For the upcoming elections to the 126-member Assam assembly, the NPP has put forward candidates in three constituencies.

In a related development, former All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) member Aminul Islam has joined the NPP after leaving his previous party and has been designated as the candidate for the Mankachar constituency.

His inclusion is viewed as a strategic move by the NPP to bolster its local influence by recruiting leaders with established connections ahead of the elections.
